Dylan Hampel on his artwork: "It's ok; I'm you, too." For disabled patients, ableist experiences permeate healthcare encounters with fear, distrust, and re-traumatization. When disabled physicians treat disabled patients, care informed by lived experience can recalibrate the inherent power imbalance in the patient-physician relationship into a bond of solidarity, sincerity, and empathy.
Dylan Hampel is a 4th year medical student at Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is applying to residency this year, and hopes to pursue a career in physical medicine & rehabilitation.
