Physician Overcoming Difficulties of Chronic Illness Yet Thriving EveryDay (PODOCYTE)

By Dr. Rameshwar “Ram” Rao, MD, PhD

Dr. Rao on their photo: This photograph was taken in April 2022 while I was enrolled in a clinical trial receiving IV infusions every other week for 6 months to treat focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a chronic kidney disease diagnosed at age 20. Podocyte injury is the characteristic finding in FSGS. This picture was taken during a nurse strike where I was the on-call physician for all of our Pediatric Oncology patients transferred to other hospitals around the Bay Area. In one hand I was receiving an infusion of an experimental medication in a Phase II clinical trial and in the other hand I was responding to messages about our patients. This is a constant reminder that I am both a doctor and a patient.

Dr. Rameshwar “Ram” Rao, MD, PhD, is 4th year pediatric hematology/oncology clinical and postdoctoral fellow at Stanford School of Medicine.
